Acacia is a magazine of politics and culture examining the pressing issues of our time. We publish news, essays, poetry, short fiction, cultural criticism, and interviews.
Acacia is interested in
essays and
features that do the following: interrogate political movements and figures especially as they relate to Muslim communities, engage in class analysis, examine the effects of the climate crisis, consider the variability of Muslim American identity and experience, and stories that examine power as it relates to both Muslim and secular American institutions. We are also interested in pieces that explore the prison industrial complex, the surveillance state, and national security. We cover international affairs to the extent that they concern American involvement, or a diaspora population within the United States. We are looking for pieces that include original reporting.
We are also interested in
cultural criticism that engages politics and history. Pieces of cultural criticism must primarily concern a work that has been released within the last year unless the work has been brought back into discourse due to a new development or discovery.
Finally, we are interested in
investigative reporting on topics such as Muslim institutions, Muslim elected officials in local and national politics, Islamophobia, and the work of social movements and organizers.
One does not need to be Muslim to contribute to Acacia, nor does the submission need an explicitly “Muslim” angle. We do, however, expect pitches to be submitted with our audience in mind. Please consider all issues that the Acacia reader will be invested in as someone who is either Muslim themselves, aligned with the political left, or in community with Muslims.
We generally do not accept pieces that have previously been published elsewhere.
To pitch us, please send an email to
submissions@acaciamag.com briefly outlining your idea, explaining why you should be the person to write this piece and why this piece should be written about now.
